Re: Timing adjustment 1986 70 HP Johnson. You should be able to achieve proper idle speed before the cam hits the roller. Throttle pickup timing (when the cam hits the roller) should be approximatly 4 deg ATDC. To adjsut the pickup timing change the lenghth of the rod by loosening the locknut and turning the knurled nut.Idle timing for that motor is 0-2 ATDC and speed is 775-825.. Idle RPM is adjusted with the IDLE timing screw, which adjusts the timing at idle only. If you cant get the motor to idle correctly between the 0-2 atdc range then check the carb mixture and engine temp. T.

The roller on the throttle arm of the carb should just touch the cam on the magneto stator as the arrow mark on the cam aligns with the throttle arm.

Apr 7, 2020. #1. Well I just checked the timing on my johnson 140 and in forward idle it’s supposed to be 4-6 degrees “throttle pickup”. I was at 16!! It was warmed up and in a tub of water. When I moved the timer base rubber stop forward till it hit, I was getting 4 degrees.
