I usually clean it again after a month of sitting. If I have been carrying it, I will put a patch with some light oil down the barrel at least a few times a week. Cleaning so often may be overkill, but I grew up shooting collector 1911s and match targets--and a dad that believed all primers were corrosive.
Small amounts of modern, inexpensive gun oil are much better than large amounts. Generally you would disassemble (field strip) your unloaded pistol, and put a drop on the barrel and use fingers to rub it over the surface. Another drop on the inside of the slide where the barrel and chamber will rub, spread thinly.Head out to the garage and put the door up, or clean your guns on a bright and dry day to get them cleaned properly. 5.
