I am an IMG as well. Heme/Onc is a terrific field. We get to know the patients well, it is mentally stimulating, nothing is routine or monotonous. The cons are that it involves very serious illness. Many of us grow close to patients and it can take an emotional toll when patients die or become sick. Suppose that is most of medicine though. In my opinion, yes. Obtaining and getting through GI residency is not a cake walk, and attending share call which can often involve emergent procedures such as food impactions, emergent ERCP. I think heme onc offers a better lifestyle. But at the end of the day, you have to enjoy the subject matter to remain happy as an attending for decades.

New drugs not as exciting as in oncology. Onc: less hands on/more cerebral. Much more meaningful relationships with your patients, most of which will be seeing you for the biggest/most difficult event of their lives. Depending on what area of Onc may have a lot of sad cases. It not an easy test, but it's much more straightforward than the heme boards and actually reflects what you're learning and will see in practice than the heme boards do. Having said that, my training was hyper disease focused but my job was ultimately as a generalist.Onc is currently very in demand but that can change in 5-10 years who knows. It is much easier to find a job for $5-600+ today in Oncology than it is to find $4-450+ as a hospitalist IMO. Also while the threat of big academic/Wall Street buy out is similar in Onc the midlevel threat is lower in the long term.
