I am an IMG as well. Heme/Onc is a terrific field. We get to know the patients well, it is mentally stimulating, nothing is routine or monotonous. The cons are that it involves very serious illness. Many of us grow close to patients and it can take an emotional toll when patients die or become sick. Suppose that is most of medicine though. In my opinion, yes. Obtaining and getting through GI residency is not a cake walk, and attending share call which can often involve emergent procedures such as food impactions, emergent ERCP. I think heme onc offers a better lifestyle. But at the end of the day, you have to enjoy the subject matter to remain happy as an attending for decades.

New drugs not as exciting as in oncology. Onc: less hands on/more cerebral.
